It depends... personally, working as a freelance I earn much more than any other designer in my country but you need time to put a good portfolio online and contact the right people. Lets say you put the limit, if you are good, fast and you know how to promote yourself you will earn much more. If you send them big traffic they will notice it for sure. If you link from your site to a big site the chances of getting a link back are 0, if you link to small sites the chances are higher though getting traffic is nothing to do with this.
