Videotutorial: digital color with Photoshop

Digital color with Photoshop
To see the video just click on the image.

Here is the last step when designing mascots for websites. I did this color job just to do this video, so its a short version, I usually spend around 3h per mascot design when I work from sosfactory, but this would be too long, impossible to edit, maybe in the future :)

If you have any doubt, or suggestion, please just leave a comment and I will reply as soon as possible.

  3. Reminder for future requests:

We dont work for peanuts… pay peanuts and get monkeys. If you need a 20US$ design we are not the right people.

  5. Hello Ruthlezz, if you want to learn how to use photoshop the best way is reading books, visiting blogs or tutorials sites, its the way everybody learn.

Think I work from SOSFactory, I manage this blog and the spanish version, design, articles and all the promotion online… I need some spare time too :)

  6. Thats a very cool tutorial, however I found it a bit fast and I couldn’t really see the tools you used very well at that speed. Nice to watch though and I learned allot about shading techniques. I was just wondering do you use a Wacom tablet? I have a mouse and can never get my lines to curve that smoothly. I always end up having to use the pen tool for shadows and get a cell shaded look, not really my preference.

  7. Hello Dvanex, thanks :)

Yah is true, I usually spend around 3h per character design, so I have to be agressive in the videoediting… maybe in the future I could afford longer videos.

And yes, if you are serious about digital painting a WACOM tablet is a must.

  8. @Ruthlezz:
What exactly do you design? ^^

Btw, nice tut. standardly speaking, is this really the easiest way to color characters? You see, I’ve seen so many good works and I’ve always wondered, “how do they do all those smooth hair lines, wavy hair shine and perfect skin/cloth shadow? There’s gotta be some 1-click trick that does all the hardwork for you, they just won’t tell me!”.

    Comments de Shao — June 2, 2007 @ 11:57 pm

  9. Shao, this is the fast version, done just to show how is the process, really its more complex and longer but the videoediting would be really long.

Im afraid there is not tricks, just practice and practice. :)

  15. That’s a great tutorial Sergio! Thanks for doing it.

I have a question though. When you’re adding new layers on top of the main layer (with the outlines), how are you adding highlights and color without it actually coloring over top of the outlines of the main layer? Is that because of the “multiply” mode?

    Comments de Deron Sizemore — February 8, 2008 @ 10:32 am

  16. I forgot to ask too, are you using a mouse or tablet? If you’re using a tablet, is this possible with a mouse?

    Comments de Deron Sizemore — February 8, 2008 @ 10:32 am

  17. Hello Deron, thanks for visitin us :)

I put the lineart, and all the colors below. First layer is the one with flat colors, I do it to choice the right color scheme but much more important, to do fast selections (I think in the tutorial the selection is hide CTRL+H).

Next week smashingmagazine will publish a tutorial of mine, there will be all very clear.

Everything is possible with a mouse or a tablet if you are skilled enough, but obviously tablet helps a lot, mainly because its faster. I would suggest you buy one, the cheapest one is enough and will help you a lot. Take a look to this article: http://www.sosnewbie.com/en/resources/manual-to-choice-your-first-graphics-tablet/

Thanks again for the visit :)
    Sergio

  18. what exactly do you use your tablet for? I see that you make sketches with pencil, and coloring with mouse…

maybe you color with tablet also?
anyways thanks for a superb website, it couldn’t be better. Congratulations! :)

    Comments de David — June 13, 2008 @ 5:28 pm

  19. Hello David, thanks :)

I use my tablet for everything. From sketching to ink or color.

I usually ask some help to my buddies, they are comic artists, its because you see some pencil skechts. For the rest everything is digital, sometimes even the skecht is done with the tablet.

  20. […] Many illustrators color everything in one layer, i prefer to to it in separate ones, so i can make color modifications in any of the design tones, lights or shadows. Let me briefly explain each step, if you want to get into details I highly recommend you to watch the Photoshop coloring videotutorial. […]

  23. Hello buddy, the problem is I dont speak english properly so I cant explain all the process, I need to add those callouts… really time consuming.

I think you should follow the written tutorials better, the videos are just for extra motivation.
